Bishkek, the vibrant capital, sits at 750–900 metres in the Chu River valley beneath the spectacular Ala-Too mountains. A city of leafy boulevards and open-air cafés, it blends Soviet-era grandeur with a youthful, modern energy. It's the perfect gateway for exploring the rest of the country — and fascinating in its own right.
The Legend of Manas
The Epic of Manas is the soul of Kyrgyz identity — an oral poem over 3,000 years old and twenty times longer than the Iliad and Odyssey combined. It chronicles the hero Manas and his battles for the Kyrgyz people's freedom and homeland. Hearing a manaschi (bard) perform it in a yurt under the stars is one of the most unforgettable experiences in Central Asia.
